ECO marketing: Create, Innovate, Change

Jean-Pierre Veilleux, Vice President at Ove, addressed an audience composed mainly of Corporate Executives at the Eco Marketing Conference, held on September 16 and 17 in Toronto. His presentation Sustainability Reporting, Expense or Investment? took the audience through a tour of how a variety of companies have become leaders in sustainability reporting and strengthened their competitive position by leveraging their CSR reporting stream to communicate a meaningful and substantive identity.

In his hour-long presentation, he argued that reframing thinking around a company’s approach to corporate social responsibility and sustainability reporting can yield significant competitive advantages and also demonstrated how those companies that have moved beyond a limiting reporting mindset – one characterized by a regulatory framework – and toward an authentic, active and sustained communications approach (a cornerstone of most organizations’ reputation-building) are reaping the benefits of this approach.

Jean-Pierre also discussed the fact that given the current focus and interest on sustainability issues, corporate environmental programs and the ability to link these initiatives to an organization’s brand communications platform, was fast becoming an important determinant in whether or not companies are rewarded in the marketplace. By placing sustainability at the core of a corporation’s brand platform, organizations engender a trust that goes far beyond that of mere product-based brand affinity. This trust actually eases customer’s confusion around green/eco-friendly product claims and easily becomes the main currency of business by establishing a bond based on shared values.

Jean-Pierre also took the delegates through a step-by-step process to creating a CSR report and a review of local and global best practices showing how these key principles and learnings can be applied to greatly benefit their own organization.
